This bed is Slat bed type. Most of slat beds have 3-6 slats to support the mattress. Depending on your mattress you will probably need a box spring or bunkie board as well (only exclusion is if you mattress is really solid and really high or you have some kind of alternative support already). Boxes as mattresses can be different height as well.

Memory foam mattress with slat beds can be used with box spring only.
